A journey from 17th Century England to 18th Century Germany
This innovative programme will be a rare invitation to the listener to compare the intimate and passionate worlds of two of the greatest composers of song: the Elizabethan John Dowland, the deeply troubled lutenist at the court of Elsinore; and the early Romantic Franz Schubert, whose music ranges from the bleakest despair to the most carefree joy. Dowland’s introspective and melancholic works are set in musical contrast to Schubert’s settings of some of the profoundest expressions of solitude: the Songs of the Harpist, by the greatest of all the German Romantic poets, Goethe.
Peter Harvey is well known for his performances and recordings of the baroque repertoire and is also an acclaimed recitalist. His recitals of both Lieder and Lute Songs in the Wigmore Hall have been very well received, and he is currently expanding his repertoire in both fields.
Die Winterreise : Auxerre, France:
“We knew him to be Baroque: he is also a Romantic (…) An intense moment of German Romanticism, sung (and acted, since gesture counts as well) by one of the most refined singers of our time.” (Nouveau Journal de L’Est)
Matthew Wadsworth
…“speaks the baroque language like a native” wrote BBC Music Magazine. He has appeared at many of the major festivals in the UK and Europe, and can frequently be heard on radio, either in live performance or on disc. His CD recording of Piccinini and Kapsberger for Deux-Elles Records has received international critical acclaim.
Gary Cooper
…was recently dubbed “something of a genius” by the Times. Known particularly for his performances and recordings of Bach's keyboard works on harpsichord, Gary is increasingly expanding his reach into the Classical/Romantic repertoire on the fortepiano.
