Even though Bach never left his native Germany, his appetite for foreign music was insatiable. In particular, Bach was drawn to the Italian concerto and chamber music. This program will include Bach’s own transcriptions of concerti by Antonio Vivaldi and Johann Ernst, works based Italian themes and models, including the Canzona in D Minor and the Fugue on a Theme of Corelli, and large scale masterpieces that demonstrate his assimilation of the Italian style, such as the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (‘The Dorian’).
