Theile’s St. Matthew Passion is a compelling setting in the German Lutheran tradition we know from the Passions of J.S. Bach. German passion settings, unlike their Latin-texted counterparts, convey the story of the last week in the life of Christ in almost operatic proportions. Choruses, virtuoso solo arias, chorales and brilliant instrumental writing combine to produce a rich tapestry of sound capturing the intense drama of the familiar story. Following the successful premiere of Telemann’s setting of the same text in 2003, this concert will mark the first performance of this work in New York City. The program will also include Jesu meines Lebens Leben by Dietrich Buxtehude.
Admission $30; students and seniors $20
