Renaissance Revival will perform a concert of a cappella choral selections, “In praise of Music”, on Sunday, April 15 at 7 p.m., at Saint Joseph Church, 99 Jackson St., in Willimantic, Connecticut.
In a selection of music spanning nearly five centuries, the program explores the many ways that composers have sung the praises of music. Madrigals and motets from favorite Renaissance composers such as Hans Leo Hassler, Orlando di Lasso, William Byrd, and Orlando Gibbons offer a glimpse into the composer’s minds, as they contemplate their art and consider how music permeates our lives.
While some of the songs extol the simple pleasures of singing and dancing, others explore the almost magical powers of music to inflame a lover’s passion, to heal a broken heart, or to soothe an uneasy spirit. Perhaps the most joyous and exciting selections are settings of several Psalms, songs of praise and exultation that invoke the sounds of voices and instruments.
There is no admission charge; we encourage freewill donations. Suggested donation is $10; $5 for children or seniors; and $20 for families of three or more.
