Martin Codax

(fl. 13th century)

Spanish troubadour and jongleur from Vigo. His six songs (which were discovered in the binding of a fourteenth century MS in 1914) are the earliest known Spanish secular songs that are capable of transcription; their texts are in Galician-Portuguese dialect, and the non-mensural melodies are simple, with some resemblance to Galician folksong and Mozarabic chant.
