John Cooke

(1385?-1442?)

English composer, represented in the Old Hall MS. 1402-03, Chorister of the Chapel Royal. From 1413, Clerk of the Chapel Royal of Henry V. From 1413 through 1422 in the service of Henry V. From 1419, also member of the Collegiate Church of Hastings. From1429 through 1455 recorded as a member of the Chappell Royal. of Henry VI.

The Old Hall MS contains five Mass movements and three motets of Cooke's. Some of his music is in the 'free treble' style, with an ornamental melody over two accompanying parts. Other pieces use a chordal style, or alternate sections for two or four voices. A motet, Ave proles regia, is isorhythmic.
