André (Andries) Pevemage

(1543 - 1591)

Franco-Flemish composer. Having been a choirboy he was later choirmaster at Notre Dame, Courtrai, in 1565-85 (apart from a period when Calvinists controlled the city), and then at Notre Dame in Antwerp. He published five volumes of chansons in a serious style more akin to the madrigal or motet; though never visiting Italy he both wrote madrigals and edited an anthology of them in 1583. His church music in up to eight parts shows the influence of the doublechoir style; four of his sacred pieces are legibly portrayed in contemporary paintings.
