Filippo Azzaiolo

(ca. 1530 - 1569)

Italian composer, singer in various Bolognese churches. He is famed above everything for having published three books of villotas alla padoana for four voices (1557-1569) entitled Villotte del fiore. These publications collected his own compositions and those of others in a light popular style using devices such as dance rhythms and nonsense syllables. Chi passa was especially well known and was used as the basis of a keyboard piece by William Byrd.
