Girolamo Diruta

(c1550x60 - after 1609)

Italian organist, composer and Minorite monk. A pupil of Costanzo Porta, Zarlino and Merulo, he was probably an organist in Venice until 1593 and was later organist at the cathedrals of Chioggia (1597) and Gubbio (1609). Il Transilvano, a 2-volume treatise on how to play and write for the organ, contains pieces by Diruta himself as well as Banchieri, Bellavere and Quagliati.
