François Roussel (Rosselli)

(fl. 1546-77)


French composer. His musical career was spent largely in Rome, as choirmaster to the Cappella Giulia at St Peter's (1548-50) and then, after a period in Lyons, at S. Lorenzo in Damaso (c1563-6), S. Luigi dei Francesi (1566-71) and St John Lateran (1572-5). His sacred music was examined along with that of Palestrina and Lassus by the Council of Trent. He also published three volumes of madrigals and one of chansons.
