Stephan Mahu

(1480-90 - after 1541)


Austrian composer. Served King Ferdinand I from 1528 as a sackbut player and from 1532 as vice-Kapellmeister. Some of his secular songs and church music appeared in anthologies from 1526 onwards; the fact that some of these were published by Rhaw suggests that though employed at a rigidly Catholic court he had Protestant sympathies. Other works survive in manuscript.
