Adrian Batten

(1591-1637)

English musician and organist. Student of John Holmes. Child chorister of Winchester Cathedral in the 1590s. Singing man of Westminster Abbey from 1614. Vicar-choral of St Paul's Cathedral and Organist of St Paul's Cathedral jointly with John Tompkins 1626-37. Batten was a most prolific composer of Anglican service music and anthems, some of which continued long in use; he was represented in much later collections such as Boyce's Cathedral Music. An organ book of his at St Michael's College, Tenbury, contains much sixteenth century church music in organ score, for some of which it is the only extant source.
