John Heywood

(ca. 1514-1587)

English composer, poet, playwright and virginalist to Henry VIII and Mary. Instructor of Thomas Whythorne. Musician on virginal to Henry VIII 1520-53. Master of the Children of St Paul's Cathedral from some time in the 1530s through 1559. Produced plays from 1548. On Mary's death he fled to Malines, where he probably died. He witnessed Thomas Mulliner's ownership of The Mulliner Book. No keyboard music by him survives.
