Giovanni Priuli

(1575 - 1629)

Italian composer. Served at Urbino, St Mark's, Venice, the court of Archduke Ferdinand at Graz and later Vienna, where he directed music from 1614 or 1615. His sacred music reveals a debt to Giovanni Gabrieli, with whom he studied in his handling of rich sonorities; this is true also of his instrumental canzonas, one of which has notated echo effects. He also published madrigals.
