Johann David Hermann

(ca 1760-1846)

German piano teacher and composer. Hermann settled in Paris in 1785, and had great success with his first piano concerto at the Concerts Spirituel. Chosen by Marie Antoinette as a teacher, he became fashionable as teacher to the ladies of the court. During the Revolution, he became wealthy speculating in the purchase of national property, including that of the Duc de Choiseul, and thereafter only taught and performed as an amateur.
