Matthias Greiter

(c1495 -1550)

German composer. A priest and singer at Strasbourg cathedral until the Reformation, he became a Protestant and stayed on to direct congregational singing (which greatly impressed Calvin). However, in 1549 he returned to the Catholic Church. His psalm tunes were much admired, and some appeared in Calvin's 1539 psalter; he also composed sacred songs and motets on German texts.
