Johann Krieger

(1651 - 1735)

German composer. A pupil of Schwemmer, according to Mattheson ; studied keyboard with Wecker, 1661-68, and perhaps composition with his brother Johann Philipp at Zeitz in 1671; took over as organist at Bayreuth in 1672, a post his brother had vacated soon before; worked as organist at Greiz (1678-80) and Eisenberg (1680-82) before becoming cantor at St. Johannis in Zittau, where he stayed for the rest of his life. Praised by Mattheson and Handel for his contrapuntal skill, he published keyboard collections in 1697 and 1698 containing suites and a variety of other types of pieces; he also wrote church music.
